August is a remnant of the now extinct Old Prussian tribes of the Baltic. As a first-generation Canadian of refugee immigrants banished from their homeland as children she explores diasporic abstract landscapes to seek a lost history, connections, and roots. Building upon traditional techniques while embracing innovation and individuality, August’s contemporary watercolours and oil paintings are like a conversation between artistic expression and geometric and spatial ideas which lean heavily on her cartographic and graphic arts training. The result is a visual blend where art and sciences meet, each shaping the other in unexpected ways.
The concept of space, geometry and dimensions plays a big role in her approach. For August, layering shapes and dimensions, playing with perspective and distance creates a spatial invitation and quest reaching beyond physical boundaries to experience and explore new worlds and possibilities since her history was wiped away.
